Anybody have some good links to read up on the 3-4 defense? Looking for a little reading to do on a cold Friday night.

The first link breaks down the more traditional 3-4 in basic terms. The second link (The Phillips 3-4) is what I personally feel FSU should try to run if a switch to the 3-4 is imminent (Note how this system is a one gap 3-4 predicated upon d-linemen being able to get upfield as opposed to occupying blockers. The third link is good because we have some defensive backs and linebackers who would fit these roles in sub-packages.
Good stuff from Saban on the history of Belichick's hybrid or subpackage defenders, Star and Money: If the video doesn't start there automatically,

Good stuff thanks for posting these D. Was wondering how our current personel would be transformed if we were to change to the 3-4 scheme as well.
****After reading the Bum Phillips 3-4 i can see where you are coming from in that our personel matches what is asked of the players.
Whats most intriguing is the variety of blitz packages as well as players you could blitz.
The thought of linning Jernigan(WDE) Goldman(NG) and Mario (SDE) would be a nasty front three. While dropping Casher (WOLB) who would be our edge rusher and still have the athleticism to cover the flat.
Could see LOS playin at any of the other LB spots with his athleticsm and size. Would be able to help with run support or able to cover if needed.
Could see Northrup playin one of the inside LB positions and beasting
Eligwe playin SOLB with the ability to cover the TE and he with run support.
Just rambling and finding it interesting how our personel would look in this package..lol

Thank you, that's exactly what I was looking for.
Shanks would be the perfect 3-4 NG...
This would be my 3-4 defense, but FSU just doesn't have the LB's needed in terms of size
DE - Mario Edwards/Giorgio Newberry
DT - Eddie Goldman/Justin Shanks/Nile Lawrence Stample
DE - Tim Jernigan/Demonte McAllister
OLB - Bjoern Werner/Freddie Stevenson
MLB - Christian Jones/Telvin Smith/EJ Levenberry
MLB - Ukeme Eligwe/Reggie Northrup
OLB - Chris Casher/Terrance Smith/Tyrell Lyons
DB - Xavier Rhodes/PJ Williams/Colin Blake
DB - Ronald Darby/Nick Waisome/Keelin Smith
Nickel - Tyler Hunter/PJ Williams
FS - Lamarcus Joyner/Karlos Williams
SS - Terrance Brooks/PJ Williams
Moving to a 3-4 would be so stupid however due to how many solid DT's FSU has and the lack of LB's with great size
The transition would be painful to watch with the current roster, especially if Werner leaves and say Casher couldn't handle a move to LB... would be a nightmare of epic proportions iyam and is very unlikely to happen, or even be considered

I would agree that with the recuits we currently have it would be beneficial to maintain the 4-3 as our base D, wouod like to see the 3-4 mixed in certain situations.
We've been recruiting lights out at DT and 3-4 would hinder the production from that position.
3-4 seems to revolve around the LBs and despite a lot of talent not sure a 3-4 is best suited our current talent.
I do like the vairety of blitzes that can be ran outta a 3-4,
3-4, 4-3 i just wanna see some pressure and blitzing to force some damn takeaways
I like the options that a 3-4 opens up but I'm of the opinion that part of the reason we have done so well recruiting DL the last few years is because we run a 4-3 while our biggest recruiting competitors run a 3-4 (Bama, UF, UGA). If we went full time to a 3-4 next year I would expect a bad defense in the range of 60-70 in the country. I wouldn't be opposed to using it as a change up though, especially in a 3rd in long blitz package.
Thanks for the reading material ITT, guys. Good stuff. I think a couple good points have been made, in that we've been recruiting for a 4-3 defense the last few years, and the fact that our LB play wasn't stellar this year (at least not to the point where you're clamoring to get another one on the field). if we have the personnel, I'd love to see it though. A well-run 3-4 defense is really fun to watch.
After reading more about the 34 defense I don't think the issue would be the D-line. Like Nova posted you would basically play 2 DTs, one being the NG and one being the strong side DE/DT. The pass rushers really come from the OLBs spots, so FSU wouldn't really be wasting the DT talent they have now. The real issue is with the size and fit of the LBs. Originally I thought Karlos would be great for the 3-4 OLB spot but i'm not sure he could be an amazing pass rusher.
I'm not sure how you start a transition over to a 3-4 but if FSU were to do it, they would have to play a lot of young and inexperienced players at LB (casher, Eligwe Stevenson, Northrup). It seems like LB's have a lot of pieces just not sure how they fit together.
I kind of like how the D-line would look in the 3-4 Mario--Goldman/Shanks/NLS--Jernigan/McAllister
I think Reggie Northrup has a big breakout year in 2013.
Fify, he likely doesn't even start next year
Terrance Smith, Christian Jones and Telvin will be the main starters I feel like
Maybe Jones leaves though
Yeah apparently Jones is dipping out.
