Chadd Scott weighs in on FSU's move to the Big 12...

  • satexas said...

Let's be clear about some facts -

SEC teams get about $17-mil per year, and that's about to go up. UF gets $17 mill for SEC plus $10 mil for 3rd tier rights. Total: $27mil.

Big12 just signed for $20-mil a year, and Texas get's double that in $20 mil for Big12 plus $20 mil for espn longhorn network 3rd tier. Total: $40mil

    What's FSU getting?

$12.7 million and HOPES that the new contract, commited LONNNNNNNNNG term, will at a whopping 1.5 million for each time, a ceiling of $15 million on the upside.

Total? $12.7 mil and maybe $15mil

Big 12 would allow for tier 3 rights as well. Call that HALF of what UF gets........so $5 Million.

That is $25 Million in the Big 12 versus $15 in the ACC.

    $100 Million over 10 years.

If FSU can say no to that, they certainly aren't concerned about my small time $1200 donation.

Not if you kick their tail every year. That'd be pretty fun.

So a move to the Big 12 could provide that increase in budget?

Gotta think more $$ from Big12 would only help.

Big 12 schools are making 35% more than we are now. Adding Clemson and FSU should only increase that number relative to ACC schools.

But its better than making 12.9 million in the ACC, who people also think cater towards Carolina schools. Id rather make 10+ million more and be controlled by Texas than make 10+ million less and be controlled by the ACCCarolina schools

Exactly. People don't realize how hard it's going to be for FSU to reach and maintain powerhouse level. They still have their heads stuck in the sand known as "the 90's bro".

Granted FSU has sucked the last decade.. but had the playoffs been in effect the last TEN YEARS... FSU would have gotten a bonus check ONCE while every SEC team got one yearly, as almost did the Big12 teams, yadda yadda.

    People, the gap is WIDENING.

You think we're in a budget crisis now.... just wait. "It's about to get real up in here homey"

Awesome the extra 11mill annually (rough estimate) it will cost the AD to play all sports in the B12, will only result in a 1mill loss.

    Really?

So you've compared the distances of the ACC to the Big12 schools?

No, you haven't. All of your posts recently are costs-negated by travel distance.. but you're ignoring the facts of how far away BC, Maryland, Pitt, Syracuse, etc are compared to the Big12.

ALSO, what you fail to consider is that if FSU moves, it would ONLY happen if some other ACC teams go with them.. such as Clemson or Miami, or both. Considering you play "home and home", you can "half" the travels right there.. then remove your "old acc buddies" from the list as they came too.

Have you not done the math PBen?

I have to admit, it makes a lot of sense why it won't happen. I love how he calls out Swofford and the ACC refs.

I disagree. Money. Money. Money. FSU's money in relation to SEC schools is what matters here. Let me repeat that: FSU's money in relation to SEC schools is ALL that matters.

    * Disengagement? Our fans ENJOY playing a slate full of ACC opponents (Duke, Wake, BC, UMD, UVA, others and soon to be Pitt and Cuse) who never travel to Tallahassee?

    * Academics? The ACC has turned FSU into some kind of academic dynamo in the last two decades? Does the Big 12 hurt Texas' academics/research? Does the SEC hurt Vanderbilt's?

I refuse to read the moron's article and give him "hits." But those are two of the things I saw copy and pasted that he talked about and both are complete crap. How can ANYONE write a relevant expansion article and not discuss conference revenue? no

Absolutely. It's hard to imagine the Big 12 not being more profitable for FSU than the ACC at this point.

We already make more than half of what UF makes and that's without some of the live-game content they have the rights to. We also signed our deal a year or two before them right before the market went berserk (yea, unlucky timing again, but $6.6M vs $10M isn't the end of the world) so I feel pretty good about how the market values our property.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------
(The rest is not directed towards you, 55Nole.)

Potential revenue as I see it (no sources, just best guesses):

    $20M base Big 12 payout
    +
$1M minimum per school to join the Big 12 (at least 4 new schools, up to 6, I'd imagine)
    +
$1M minimum per school for the creation of a CG
    +
$1M minimum for additional 3rd tier rights
    =
$26M minimum for 14 schools, $28M minimum for 16 schools (+ the $6.6M we are already receiving in our ISP multimedia rights deal = $32.6M minimum)
    +
Additional revenue by sending 2 teams to the football playoffs more often than the ACC (no one is able to quantify just how much that may be)

In the ACC, even if they can land $20M per school like the Big 12 (and no legitimate website has claimed $20M is attainable for the ACC), it'd still be significantly less than the potential revenue the Big 12 could offer and it'd be short of what the SEC was receiving. That'd be $26.6M ($20M base + $6.6M ISP) or roughly $6M less than the Big 12's worst "projection." A network may be in play for the ACC but ESPN owns all of the ACC's content. In order to get that back to create a network I'd think ESPN would want concessions from the ACC in other areas (ie, less money per year and/or a contract extension, neither being good news for FSU). The ACC looks less and less appealing to me every day.
