Chadd Scott backtracks on his FSU to Big 12 stance

  • Notables:

-I am certain Florida State and Clemson would prefer to be members of an aggressive, contemporary, innovative and visionary ACC rather than run off to the nation’s hinterland aligning themselves with a hodgepodge of schools they share nothing in common with, but that’s not what they are receiving from the ACC.
-Victories they were unable to collect during the season can be found in the off-season through a “win” in conference realignment.
-Human beings are emotional creatures. The endorphin rush from being wanted can prove irresistible and cause us to do things we never would with a clear head.
-A lack of options and now money are the only things binding the Big 12 schools together. They share none of the brotherhood and vision for the future which exists in the SEC, Big 10 and Pac 12.
-Florida State University allowing its football program to spearhead a decision of this magnitude and reach is dangerous.

    What say you all?

The Miscalculations Which Lead to My Missing the FSU to Big 12 Story | College Football News, Opinion and Analysis | Chuck Oliver.Net

I have long discounted any possibility of Florida State leaving the ACC for the Big 12. That assessment was clearly inaccurate. This column will be an attempt to determine where I went so wrong in my gauge on this story.

  • Great article. I hope no matter what happens, that we keep the rivalry going between our schools. It makes for high quality entertainment in college football.

  • That's tooooo many words to read at 9am on a Monday.

I didn't read it. I do see everyone blasting him for being contradicting and other things on Twitter.

Doubt the FSU/Miami rivalry continues on a year-to-year basis, CANEfaninSC. That would be over-loading your plate so to speak. I could see FSU/Miami having a home and home arrangement every few years like the Gators/Canes have been doing.

    Just guessing there...

  • He looks absurdly arrogant while sticking to the "I've been correct about every expansion detail..." line.

But, He makes a great point when he says that all members of SEC, BIG 10, and PAC12 would want to stay in their league if given a choice and that's not the case with Big 12.

Thankfully, the Big XII is stronger than ever now, so even if that's true, it's an irrelevant point.

Last year, the Big XII signed a 6 year grant of rights. Meaning, even if they left, the conference would still own the media rights, making that school worthless to another conference. With the new contract, an extension will be signed, until 2025 I believe. So that means the conference owns tiers 1 and 2 media rights. They will get paid even if UT, or anybody for that matter left. What conference is going to invite a school they can't make money on? NOBODY.

  • Weird article. Sort of comes off as "I was wrong, but if everyone else could just be as smart as me, I would have been right."

Look Captain's go down with the sinking ship. The ACC has continually shown us that we're barely a deck hand. We saw the iceberg. We warned the captain. The captain kept on his chosen course.

It's our duty to get off and find the safest port with which to dock.

Yes this is a jumbled metaphor, at best but you get the point.

  • I didn't click the article but 1-2 of his points outlined by the OP are just dumb.

As this thing nears fruition some reporters will ramp up confidence and some will wilt and start laying down doubts so they can save face if it falls through. Or you have Dot Com who will just say it's all internet rumors until it scrolls across ESPN.

You could be right about the home and home, but I hope it remains as it has. Still my favorite rivalry of any sport pro or college.

  • A few things:

It appears that the BOT/ email issue may have been more by design as a good cop/bad cop scenario. I know some (such as Tony Barnhart) have objected to this method and I am not sure why. expcet it does appear umseemly. Unless you make noise you don't know who will come out of the woodwork. This was probably a ploy to smoke out ND regarding the ACC. As in, if they move to the Acc maybe we decide to stay. Granted Friday's announcment wasn't a smoking out of anyone so much as a cluster bombing of the BCS and therefore the Big East and ACC were collateral damage.

ND will also become collateral damage in the new regime if it does not move to a conference by 2016. The NBC contract expires after the 2015 season.

Now you have the Soviet bloc (the Big 10 and Pac 12) and the West (The SEC and Big 12). Sure the non aligned movement (India, Brazil, etc) was interesting but of little consequence at the end of the day.

Make no mistake, the ACC is part of the non aligned movement.

  • As a whole, I thought the article was rather interesting and "on point" with regard to many subjects. I didn't sense arrogance from him as much as regret. Apparently, he was a believer in what the ACC "could have been". However, much like us, he sees that will not be possibly now with the ACC leadership's short sightedness.

I am all for moving to the BigXII, but I still have apprehension about it. What happens when the luster of the first few years wears off...where will we be then? We all know he is right about Clemson and FSU wanting in the SEC. We would have left rather quickly if the invite would have been extended anytime in the last 8 years or so. If we go to the BigXII, we will probably NEVER see ourselves in the SEC. But I digress...

The truth is that if the ACC would have done a North/South Split (even with UM in the North) and taken care of the officiating long ago, I doubt highly we would be even having these conversations despite the low quality of the TV contract. I THINK it can be argued that if those things had happened, FSU and its football team and record would have been the better for it and the ACC TV contract would have reflected that. It's all just speculation at this point though.

  • Chadd conveniently ignores the reality that the ACC is an academic/basketball centric conference that has become a progressively epic failure in football. The ACC had ZERO teams in the AP Top 20 in 2011 and its conference champion got blown out by a WVU team that was blown out by Syracuse??? It is no accident that every team that has joined the ACC has seen its football fortunes ultimately decline as the SEC overwhelms the recruiting landscape with real football first schools and a lot more resources.

Chadd criticizes the Big 12 but he fails to make any case for staying in the mediocrity of ACC football.

The good news for Chadd is that there is a very real possibility that feckless UT "leadership" kills expansion for now so that DeLoss Dodds can continue to chase his ND wet dream and Mack Brown can avoid more competition while he rehabs the disaster he created at UT over the last two years. Mack may wind up saving Chadd's "realignment reputation"!!!

This is the main point most people are missing when discussion the Big12's questionable security. They have pulled a complete 180 and and bypassed most other conferences with this move. GOR is massive leverage for conference security and makes a decision by any new member a long term one.

  • The article really calls out Swofford. He actually backs FSU in Clemson in a round a bout way saying we are pretty much being forced to leave because the ACC leadership is atrocious.

    Agreed

I want a 12 team big 12 with 8 games so we can play UM

Or I want a 14 team big12 and um comes with

    delawarenole

  • The speculation I've read indicates an 8 game schedule.
That would allow us to keep our rivalries with both UM and UF.

If, however, we have a 9 game schedule, then one of those rivalry
    games goes away!

Why can't we just use Miami as an OOC warm up game? With the way that program is headed, they would serve as a great tune up game.
