Canes freshman Tracy Howard on first team

  • No offense, Sean, but who really cares? I follow what UF, VT, and Clemson are up, but I have zero interest in the Canes. They are no threat whatsoever. They used to be fun to hate; now they're just sad.

    Howard is good, but you can't sit here and say those that have been on the team are better than him.. He is very good, not taking that away from him... His path was easier at UM...

    Fsufsu, did you miss the part where Howard recently ran a 4.65 40? Our fans would be giving Darby or Waisome the Shelton treatment if they had. I have no doubt that Howard will be a good CB, but let's hold off on annointing him anything till he hits the field. All he's done is beat out Brandon McGee who is mediocre at best. Waisome, Darby, and Keelin all could too.

    Howard doesnt run a 4.65. I realize he ran it, one day, in the last week, when asked to but he's faster then that. Howard is really freakin good. We can admit that.

  • To cane fans... Its not spinning it the wrong way or anything. I feel completely sure that TH will be a great CB and is probably good enough to start over a lot of more EXP players... But the point is he jumped into the role in 3-4 days... shows that your depth is low right now... not even a knock on your program its just the truth... He doesn't have to earn it but I don't doubt that he will... And even if you want to be upset about it, it does show that you are down right now when a true freshman is named the starter before anything major happens. Don't get me wrong I am expecting that he he will prove it on the field.

  • I think he is as productive as Armstrong was. A 5'10 165 lb corner running a 4.7 isn't ideal.

    I generally agree with you but have a small disagreement if i may play devil's advocate. All hbcu was saying is howard and Darby have played literally the same number of snaps of college ball, 0. Waisome never started a game for us as our cb either. No one disagrees that Howard has all-world potential (i readily admit it even with my disdain for um) and can ultimately end up better than our guys, but to say it as if it happened is premature. There are alot of factors and things can happen that will have an effect. Everything is speculative at best and not grounded in actual fact. That is the point

  • Howard is a hell of a player.....hope he enjoys the playing time since he won't see a bowl game for a while.

    Maybe never if he goes pro early.

  • There is a large jump from HS [any HS] to Div 1 ball. Cornerback is one of those positions that requires substantial amount of experience on top of that jump. Rarely does a cornerback start his freshman year as a great college cornerback or even average. To have a true freshman be given the position on his 4th day of practice speaks to desperation at best. [or maybe a promise fulfilled from Golden?] No good team could or would do that with any cornerback if they could possible avoid it. Name the great Miami cornerbacks that were given the job on their 4th day of practice! No they earned the starts and became good as a result.
    On top of that the game is a team sport where even the best player can look really bad if his peers don't perform.
    Good luck with the season, but that sounds like trouble to me. If Darby starts at FSU the first game I think the same thing.

    4.65 - 40 yard dash
    4.44 - Shuttle
    26.5" - VJ

    Actually it is. You just don't want it to be. Howard has played CB against 3-5 stars day in and out for 4 years. Darby has been a swiss army knife for 4 years. Howard > Waisome.

    So yeah

    I'd say Darby is equally ready and could also start as a freshman.

  • This is a very bad sign for Da U...I can't remember the last Freshman to start for a good team...I know Patrick Peterson and Dre Kirkpatrick did not start there Freshman year...Kirkpatrick could not even get on the field his 1st year and they were both rated higher then Howard.

    Not to knock you but I think Darby has a legit chance to be the starter by the season.... I don't think freshman starters is the problem I think the way he was put there is.... Darby would legit have to beat out 2 other guys from seperate classes that were considered the best CB in the Nation on any given day of their respective classes... Joyner/Waisome... Joyner/Brooks will probably never be moved back to Corner but if Karlos Williams is a better option at Safety than the next best CB is at the positon then it should be considered...

    Joyner/Williams/Brooks>Joyner/Brooks/AnotherCB then it should be at least an option... but as I said that is doubtful.

    But back to my original point Darby would have to have beat out every CB that is more EXP alla Waisome, Blake, and Bright. And he would also have to be better than PJ Williams(which he is), and he would have to be better than moving Joyner or Brooks and allowing Williams to get the start... With that much to consider if Darby became the starter it would pretty much be more like saying this kid really is that good. With Tracy its he is coming in with a silver spoon and doesn't have to work for it, so not only is he not being pushed, you can't really say he is ready because you don't have anything to compare him to. Darby on the hand starting would mean he is better than guys that have legit showed they can play.

    Both are wrong in my opinion... Waisome was just as Highly regarded out of HS...and has EXP... Waisome>Darby>Howard and I'm not being a homer at all... Deferent style of CB in my opinion but the things that Tracy are better at than Darby are learnable skills where Darby is just as good and has more talent... So Darby is equal to TH now with a higher ceiling making him better...
