Campus/Tallahassee pulse

  • After last year's disappointment, I'm curious to get a read of what the local pulse is like this year. I'm still on campus as a student, but I have become disengaged with the student population for the most part.

I'm also curious because I think it will depend on the students' ages. To give you an idea, all of my friends/classmates seem to either be taking a very cautious or pessimistic outlook on the season. They cite constant let downs and disappointment as to why they find it hard to get excited about an approaching season anymore.

However, I'd be willing to bet that a majority of the underclassmen are still pretty excited and optimistic about the season.

So, any students and/or Tallahassee locals, what has the pulse been like around you?

I think this is definitely a valid argument. Something I have noticed as a student is that it seems like today, most people come to Florida State for Tallahassee, not for the school/athletics.

More than ever, the nightlife and party scene in this city is really exploding. A lot of students definitely are just hear for a good time and if the athletic department flourishes, it's just a bonus and provides for an even better time.

  • I live in Tallahassee (recent graduate) and I think most of the people I talk to have no idea how good we should be. I think most are expecting a season similar to last year. I think our fans were bored with our team last year because of the offense. People want to see points.

Eh, it's not fall numbers by any means, but summer C is a pretty busy time on campus, especially for freshmen and also seniors taking last minute classes to graduate.

True, but there are still a lot on campus.

  • Honestly, I refuse to believe until I see it with my eyes. I won't let myself get crushed like I was last year.

Meh...part of the fun is the hype and the ride.

This is what I am doing and I wrote it on a post-it after the bowl game, so I have to stick to it. Of course, I'm not in Tallahassee, so i doesn't matter for squat for this thread, but there you go.

  • I don't think we will really feel any pulse until practice starts and polls come out. Then others will jump on the bandwagon. I personally am taking a cautiously optimistic approach this year. Been let down too much. I think we should definitely be ACC Champs tho. Nothing else is acceptable, unless we are undefeated lose that game but still make a BCS Bowl

  • I live in Atl and I can tell you from the fan base up here that us "out of towners" are PUMPED! It seems like this is not just an issue with the students, but also for the Seminole Boosters, because we don't even have an idea of what the TRUE SEMINOLE shirt is going to look like this year? I haven't heard of a design, idea, motto, etc.... I was in Tallahassee a couple of weeks back on the way home from vacation and stopped by Garnet and Gold in the mall and their staff had no idea when it was going to come out. I thought it was out last year by Mid-July...I could be wrong. Either way, I see where the "wait and see" philosophy is coming from...

As for me...My inner FSU circle and people I tailgate with knew 2012 was going to be the best chance for a National Title in a long time...We said it in 2009, so we will see!

  • The people that live and breathe FSU football are excited and I know I am too! If we stay injury free I can't see anybody outside of Va Tech beating us and I'm not sure they do either

Nobody here is talking about it. They have no idea what our roster is like.

Yeah, I remember this. My freshman year (three years ago), I was in the middle of the bookstore on campus when they came out with those "Thanks for 34 great years, Bobby!" shirts (or something like that), and this girl about 10 feet away from me goes, "Wait, who's Bobby?" Her dad then says, "Um...that's Bobby Bowden." And then, even louder than her initial question, she goes, "Who's Bobby Bowden?" People just got quiet and kinda stared at her.

  • When i was in tally. Summers were for pool hopping, kickball, and booze cruizin. It was very easy to stay off the internet there. Here in naples, its hard to stay off it.

  • To answer the initial question though, I think the general vibe around campus is a cautious optimism, but at the same time, a quiet assurance. We know the season is going to start with the hype on our side, the student section is going to be full, we're going to hate Florida as per usual. We're ready to go. We know what this team is capable of, we're ready to push them to do it. I think it the feelings of the student section could just be summed up with "Let's go."

No more talk, let's do it.

  • I think that Noles everywhere learned a big time lesson last year. It doesn't matter what the roster looks like, or how the schedule sets up, or the incoming recruiting class, or any of that stuff. If you can't put it together every Saturday none of that matters. Everybody raves about the top 10 defense, which is great when you shut out NC State and give up 7 to Florida. But a REAL top 10 defense doesn't give up 35 in consecutive weeks to Wake and Clemson. A top 10 defense that gives up 14 at home to UVA doesn't do you any good if you only score 13. Also, I love Dustin Hopkins and I think he's a great kicker, but we are going to need him to make clutch field goals. Everybody wants to blame EJ (and rightfully so he's the QB) but it's tough to do much when you're getting destroyed every play. Go try and do anything getting blind sided by a 300 pound dude running full speed.

  • Live in Philly, moving to Nashville. Not a big CFB scene in Philly and it's mostly a gigantic PSU network. So they're down in the dumps. But my friends who are actually knowledgeable about CFB nationally like our chances. One friend (Pitt guy) wants to split a $1K bet on us to win the NC this year.

I went to FSU for football, not academics. No bs. I do not care if FU gave me a fully paid scholarship. I still would have paid my way to FSU. What kind of nightlife/partyscene do they have these days? The lack of clubs kind of is disappointing. In the late 90's Tally was jumping with clubs.
