Best football story ever, or the biggest lie Meyer has ever told

  • So I'm going to the gym this morning here in Atlanta. The broadcaster starts talking about a story Urban Meyer told to a bunch of OSU boosters about Woody Hayes. Now I will say that the broadcaster later said that OSU said it wasn't true, but here it is anyway.

So OSU just lost a bowl game and Woody is going off on the coaching staff. He says that the reason they lost is because the coaches aren't tough enough. He just berates the entire staff, yelling at them, "You aren't tough enough!!!"

He then pulls out a box with a snapping turtle in it. Pulls down his pants and says, "Nobody in here is tough enough to do this." Woody then lets the turtle get hold of his equipment. (I promise I'm not making this up.)

Woody then pokes the turtle in the eyes and it lets go. "Who's tough enough to do that? Tell me, who? This is how tough we need to be. etc etc."

One of the assistants then says, "Coach, I'm tough enough to do that but please don't poke me in the eye."

That's some pretty good coach humor right there.

  • I call BS. A snapping turtle would do damage to equipment. Funny story, though.

Yes, I got it. That's why I said funny story. Seriously? You suggested that perhaps it was true, and mentioned that tOSU denied it. But bring the down vote. That's cool.

  • Me thinks Woody would be woodless.

  • Meyer? lie?

"Now, it should be noted that, according to OSU AD for communication Jerry Emig, the story was told by Meyer multiple times before, with Hayes’ name swapped with former Buckeyes coach Earle Bruce."

    "@BuckeyeNotes

For the record: the joke is about Coach Earle Bruce, not Coach Hayes. It is an exaggeration! And it was exaggerated more than a year ago."

Urban Meyer tells an interesting story about Woody Hayes | CollegeFootballTalk

Current Buckeyes coach Urban Meyer is easily one of the best motivators in college football. Speaking at a seminar for Ohio high school coaches recently, Meyer shared an interesting story -- later clarified by Ohio State to be a joke -- about motivation and toughness.

What makes that story almost believable is how Hayes got fired. What was he, 65-70 years old, when he started beating on that Clemson player (who ended up on the sideline near him) for intercepting a OSU pass. A coach who is stupid enough to do that just might own a gentle snapping turtle. Urban wasn't old enough to be an assistant at that time was he?

I was watching that game and got the biggest kick out of it. Of course, Woody was fired ... and I think it was the very next day. Can you picture Bobby grabbing an opposing player and beating on his helmet?

  • Same joke has been around since Stevil was at UF except it was an alligator rather than a turtle.

lol This is the signature pic that won't die. I have turned my signature off at least a dozen times. Anyway, the bag is a football diaper bag, and yes it is huge. Very awesome for the stadium, if you know what I mean. Hint: security NEVER checks diaper bags when you're walking in with a baby/small child.

Why would a football need a diaper?

I love football, and FSU, but damn if seeing things like that don't make you cringe.

  • This is a joke that alot of coaches tell. Al Golden this joke at a coaching clinic last year but it wasn't Woody Hayes and the details change a little. It was an alligator for Al and some other big name coach. This joke is a good ice break for coaches conventions.

  • So, does Meyer have faith in the snapping turtle or in snapping another guy's equipment??

The story seems to red herring to the true issue here......
