Basketball Game Chat: FSU-NC State

  • NC State outscoring FSU in second-chance points 12-2. Coincidentally FSU trails by 10 at halftime, 40-30.

Inexperience is part if it but mostly we just don't box out or play physical in the paint...

That comes back to experience, though. Our only available interior guys are first year players. They are simply not ready to compete physically or mentally.

What do you think the problem is?

    My guess is Ham.

    fsukum

  • NC State is even more athletic than we are and there interior screens to get Howell, Leslie and Warren open are tearing us a new one. Combine that with 10 TO's and getting destroyed on the boards and we are damn lucky to be only down 10 at half. It's a good think NCState isn't very good on Def really...

I said it was part of it.... just not the main factor... you learn at a young age how to box out... at least try to... they seem to not even attempt to

Combination of coaching and not very good players across the board. By the college level you should know how to rebound and box out.

Sure, but keep in mind that we have 2 non-native players, one player who is sat out last year for an injury and one player coming in from JUCO. The competition they faced is a significant step down as is the quality of coaching.

No doubt but the fact remains you don't see the attempt or effort there... that bugs me more than the not rebounding part... too much standing around I see...

    That's not entirely fair.

    A) The talent on this team is extremely high, that's not debatable

    B) We have 2 international interior men and 2 JUCO players (1 of which hasn't played in a year)

    C) our coaching has always been under question, but keep in mind that this coach is responsible for near unprecedented heights at FSU

    D) When you have 8 players on a team of 12 (With one non-newcomer being out with an injury last year and is again this year), you're going to look bad

  • Just for the sake of halftime conversation:

    Player A: Freshman, decent rebounder

    -- matched up against --

    Player B: Senior, decent rebounder

What should the expectations be for the freshman?

The guys just look completely lost to me and overwhelmed to me. I saw one interior guy helping up one of our players under the rim after a miss! lol

NC St. then received the offensive rebound and put it back up with ease.

It's the same way on defense. The guys are thinking too much and really aren't sure of their job. Hamilton didn't all of a sudden forget how to coach a defense.

I am more talking the season not just this game. I agree and get the young and being inexperienced, however there has been many times ( not just our you big men ) that guys are watching the ball being shot rather than looking to box out....

Trust me I am a Ham fan.... lack of effort bugs me, but that is mainly cause I am a coach.... I could lose by 100 but if we played with effort and tried then I can't be mad...

It is the effort that kills me

So am I. I didn't pose the question as a means to argue against your point.

I think that is guys just not knowing their role or knowing what their teammates roles are. 8 of our 11 healthy players are first year guys.

  • I get that, trust me I do but eventually you have to hold them accountable for not making the effort ... I mean the season is nearing an end and it is the same thing.... next year I feel we will be a much improved team based on getting experience but this year the lack of effort is annoying

Kentucky has not had that problem with their freshman players the last few years

  • Thomas drives and then hands it off to White who finishes...but Warren comes right back with a three ball on the other end.
