Baseball notebook: Davis starts hot

A lap around Dick Howser Stadium. Notes include Marcus Davis' outstanding start, Justin Gonzalez' concerning injury, Scott Sitz' dominance and Jameis Winston's first save.

  • Marcus Davis is quickly becoming one of my favorite Nole players. I just hope we can get him for one more season

  • I was expecting him to have a great season, but not as good as it has been. This guy is extremely difficult to get out at the plate. His power is incredible.

  • If he countinues playing like this in ACC play he could potentiall win ACC POY

  • How about the starting pitching? Once Leibrandt settles in, this could be a formidable 4-man rotation, assuming Miller and Weaver keep things going.

    Sitz: 0.00 ERA, 12.0 innings, 0 ERs, 8 hits, 10 SOs, 3 BBs

    Weaver: 1.29 ERA, 7.0 innings, 1 ER, 2 hits, 11 SOs, 1 BBs

Miller: 2.16 ERA, 8.1 innings, 2 ERs, 5 hits, 7 SOs, 5 BBs (4 came in his first start)

Leibrandt: 5.73 ERA, 11.0 innings, 7 ERs, 10 hits, 11 SOs, 3 BBs (I think he's pitched better than his numbers show, but not up to his ability either)

Still not sure what to make of our pen or the closer situation. There's a little inconsistency among the group, but also very little work. Johnson has pitched well, Holtmann has potential, Smith has shown great ability, but besides that, we've a lot of new comers throughout the group. Bird looks like a lefty situational guy.

Probably best to consider him a one year guy and be happy as hell if you're wrong.

    That is my approach.

And possibly Winston as a closer.

Coles will be a factor there.

Ridiculous sample size I know, but three walks and allowing three inherited runners to score is not a great initial impression for the closer role.

Definitely agree, but I don't think they abandon ship with him. Unless someone seizes that closer role and shuts the door on all other competition, they will try a few different guys out there in the early schedule.

They started the season with that job open the last two years. Benincasa immediately shut the door last year. Wouldn't say anybody has yet this year through two weekends.
