  • Which of course got me running around on there.... our current SOS is 248....if you look at the intended strength numbers we would end up around 38th if 2013 played out as a normal season based on who we are playing....this is a preseason number..... Interesting that 16 of the top 17 or so are from the West???

    There were a few tournaments where a bunch of the top teams in the west plaed each other. i assume that has something to do with it.

  • Can anyone explain how RPI works. According to conference RPI, the Mountain West has teh best basketball conference and my own two eyes tell me differently. I could make a case for ACC, Big 10 and Big East being better. I could even argue the Pac 12 and Big 12 too.

    Hard to believe we'd end up with the 38th rated schedule considering the strength of the ACC. I guess not facing UNC is a big hit. We have 17 ranked games coming up.

    The MWC is very good. I think a huge reason the perception is not as high is because they are tied to NBC, not ESPN, and as a result, ESPN does not talk about those teams. I think Big Ten is better than the the MWC, but I think the MWC is probably 2nd. Sure, there are fewer great teams, but that is mainly due to only having 9 teams. The teams in the conference are very good and beat up on each other which is why you see it is so balanced.

    If we are judging a conference based on what they do against other conferences, it is easy to see why the RPI has them so high. Looking at the 6 teams with a chance to make the tournament (New Mexico, UNLV, Colorado State, San Diego State, Boise State, and Air Force) in the OOC portion of the schedule all 6 of those teams have a total of 2 sub-100 losses (Boise @ Utah and Col. State @ Ill-Chicago). To compare, FSU alone has 3 (USA, Mercer, @Auburn)

    If you wanted to credit this to poor scheduling you really can't.
    The OOC losses by those 6:
    @ Michigan State
    @ Utah (bad loss)
    @ Colorado (x2)
    Wichita State
    Florida (n)
    @ Richmond
    Syracuse (n)
    Arizona (n)
    @ Ill-Chicago (bad loss)
    South Dakota St.
    @ Saint Louis
    Oregon
    @ North Carolina

    Of the 14 OOC losses, 11 of them are against teams projected to be in the tournament.

    So... Very few bad losses, other losses are all against NCAAT teams.

    The OOC RPI's of these teams...
    UNM - 20
    UNLV - 24
    Colorado St. - 16
    SD State - 21
    Boise - 14
    AFA - 60
    Wyoming - 5 (Wyoming was actually having a great season until their best player went out for teh season at the beginning of MWC play)

    Anyway, I guess the point is that for every OOC loss a MWC team has, they seem to have 5 wins, and a lot of them are top 100 wins.

  • On the baseball RPI formula:

    The formula used in NCAA baseball is the same as that used in basketball except for the adjustment of home and road records. Starting in 2013, college baseball "RPI formula will value each road victory as 1.3 instead of 1.0. Each home win will be valued at 0.7 instead of 1.0. Conversely, each home loss will count 1.3 against a team’s RPI and each road loss will count 0.7 against a team’s RPI. Neutral-site games will retain the same value of 1.0, but the committee is studying how to determine if a game should be considered a neutral-site contest. The adjustment is based on data showing that home teams win about 62 percent of the time in Division I baseball." The change was made because of the discrepancy in the number of home games teams play. Some schools are able to play 35-40 of their 56 allowable games at home, while other teams, due to factors such as weather, may play only 20 home games.

    This adjustment replaces the current system of bonuses or penalties that teams receive. Bonus points are awarded for beating top-75 non-conference opponents on the road and penalty points are given for losing to bottom-75 non-conference opponents at home. Bonuses and penalties are on a sliding scale, separated into groups of 25, with the top bonus for a road win against a top-25 team and the worst penalty for a home loss to a bottom-25 opponent.
