Are you guys feeling better or worse....

True, it is July but we have already burned a lot of slots. I think the class will be good but right around #10 when all is said and done because we just dont have that many ships left to give. If we truly were way ahead last year for future classes (I heard this a lot both here and on WC), then we dropped the ball this year. Either that or the rosy outlook a year ago was overstated. Seems like a logical assessment to me, not sure why anyone would take issue with it.

It's not logical. It seems it is to you, because you are also being illogical. Here's why:

    1. G&G says he does not expect top 3 classes every year, but gets upset at what he believes will be a top 10 class following two top 3 classes in a row.

This is internally contradictory, =/= logic.

    2. G&G assumes coaches "dropped the ball" because our class will be ranked top 10 this year. Does not account for portions of the process outside of our coaches' control, or the possibility that our coaches wanted the vast majority of the players they got and valued those players differently than the recruiting service did.

Failure to take into account other possible solutions when arriving at a result =/= logic.

burned slots? According to whom? Dropped the ball? Why?

You'd think that our coaches recruit players and offer them scholarships because they're wanted for the team. When you're saying that the coaches are dropping the ball, you're saying that they are poor evaluators of talent, are you not? what are you basing that on?

  • Hey GG, I also tend to disagree. Right now our 2014 class looks like its going to be elite (up w 2012 caliber), and part of the reason why is because why this class MIGHT rank between 5-10. meaning we're holding spots where we see elite talent that wants to be at FSU. Hopefully, this does not fly in our face later, but have faith in the coaches, they have not let us down thus far.

  • I was never overly concerned and I still am not. Our 2 biggest needs are OL and LB. LB is already good and we have 4 good OL commits already, so really 1 more and we are good there.

Lets face it, outside of DE, everything else is just best available player.

Overall quality is down from the last 2 years, but lets face it, the last 2 years were among the top 3 in the nation, so it is nearly impossible to do that every year.

A lot of people are banking on the season helping, but it won't help all that much. This upcoming season will help the 2014 class. The 2013 class, it may help with 1 or 2 guys, that is all.

At the end of the day, we are looking good at all offensive skill positions and OL (actually our offensive class is better than defensive). On defense we are good at LB. If we add 1 top level DB and and some DL we will be fine. With the haul we had last year, our overall talent on the roster will be elite.

Burned as in used up. We have maybe 10 left.

Dropped the ball because according to most around here this time last year we were way ahead in the state for 2013......but we are not getting nearly the number of our #1 targets we were getting last year. What happened? If we were in such great shape for 2013 and we haven't dropped the ball, then explain why this thread even exists? If the 2013 class was shaping up to the expectations we had a year ago, there would be no angst and Josh never would have had a reason to start this thread.

The other side of the coin is that the coaches are doing just fine and the belief we were way ahead of the competition this time last year for 2013 was just flat out wrong. Personally I think that is more likely. What is so wrong in calling that out?

I think our staff is very good at evaluating talent. They are just having a harder time reeling it in this year. Not a knock on anyone, just stating the obvious.

  • kind of disapointed right now in things but if we land 2 of Tunsil, Matthew Thomas, or Mak Alexander ill be very content with the class

  • FSU will always recruit well. I feel though this staff took some kids that they could have waited on. If FSU has the season we expect to have it will be really interesting when those big time kids want to attend FSU.

    With that being said.....finish with

    Tunsil
    Coley
    Thomas
    Alexander
    Bryant
    3 DE's

And I'm extremely happy. You continue to get the top rated kids in the State and you will continue to DOMINATE the State.

You don't really believe that do you? FSU will be in it until NSD.

As you say, we still have 10 left, and I've seen enough from our staff to assume the players we have committed are wanted. If they aren't wanted any longer, I'm sure those players will later decide to "open things up" and move on.

Sad that he doesn't really like UF, IMO.

Could have something to do with DJ Humphries and Max Garcia, but not sure.. Landing Tunsil would have been a luxury for UF, we dont need to land a LT this cycle..

The first one I've heard of. He's a TE, right? 255lbs. Never heard of the other guy. He supposed to be good?

  • I'm not to worried. We already have a decent class and with the possibility of adding Thomas will make this a great class. Even if the worst case scenario happens and we wind up with a below average class, I think all of the magnificent recruiting from recent years will make up for it. Because FSU will most likely have a better season than our recruiting opponents and rivals (UF and UM) I think we will do a good job getting all of the elite Florida players.

DJ Humphries was the #1 OT in the country in the 2012 class... Max Garcia was a 2 yr starter at LT for Maryland that transfered to UF.. If you never heard of DJ Humphries then you dont follow recruiting very closely..

My bad. I thought at 255 lbs he'd be playing TE for you guys.

And a transfer from Maryland? Congrats!

  • I feel better about the class, I think its good but I think this years team is going to win it all. When recruits see how awesome this team is I think this class takes off!!

255!? Id love to know where you heard that from, Humphries was around 285 in spring ball..

  • I am concerned at the moment. I know we are supposed to concentrate on "Need" over ratings, but I think it is imperative that we land an elite, consensus 5-star prospect soon. Kids look at where the elite talent is going and it affects recruiting. So far we don't have that draw to pull in more talent.

    Who?

  • When it's all said and done we will land 3 or 4 of the following:

    In order of likelihood IMO:

    1) Thomas (slam dunk)
    2) Kirkland (slam dunk)
    3) Coley (should be ours, but may be turned off by our 2014 class)
    4) Collins (I give us the edge over Wisc.)
    5) McQuay (dogfight with Vandy)
    6) MacAlexander (dogfight with Clemson)
    7) Tunsil (with Jernigan and Trickett on our side we are in it 'til NSD)
    8) Marcel Harris (I thought UF had him, but I sense he's pulling away from them; keeps saying he's his "own man," doesn't need to play where dad played; FSU, UF, UT)
    9) Tim Williams (I've read we're his leader now! I don't believe it, but I think we trail only LSU. He knows how badly we want/need him)
    10) Priest Willis (only because we're in his top 15 and I think USC is out of the picture now)

Does anyone think that this is NOT possible, especially, if we have a great year? Additionally, we're going to land 2-3 non-elite DEs with terrific upside (Z Smith, Bellamy, Reynolds, etc). Will this qualify as a great class? Um, yes.

I agree with everything in your post, I did not like it when we had only 10 commits. I think FSU is going to have a big year and land a lot f those players.
