  • Haven't looked ahead too much, but does the 2014 DL class look better than the 2013 crop? If so, we may not be going as hard after that position if we look good on better 2014 guys. I remember Josh reiterating that we almost had to look at 2013 and 2014 together.

  • a bit concerned. Not much, but a bit. It is clear we are no longer the flavor of the month so if we win big then all will be fine. If not, then, what an 8-13 class?

  • I find it amusing to see people ripping, or criticizing the talent, prospects, or potential on anyone in our prospective class. We won't know what these kids can do until 2016. They aren't even seniors in high school yet. Isn't that really silly?

I know heading into the summer a lot of fans were freaking out about FSU's recruiting. I get the sense that those feelings have calmed.

What's the general consensus? Obviously there are still needs to be met, but overall how do you guys feel about the class?

I feel great about the OL, WRs, RB, and LBs.
Terrible about our inability to attract ANY DLs.
    So-so about our mediocre DBs.
Overall, pretty good. Not great, but good.

  • I agree we don't have the "elite" guys yet that we did last year at this time and I think whether people admit it or not, they feel more comfortable about a recruit if he has **** next to his name compared to ***. I agree, we have a big year and we'll pull some big names and probably get some top names to switch. Several of our "lower ranked" guys will get a bump.

  • Im disappointed. Wish we had these numbers to give last year when we were blazing hot. Coaches dropped the ball this year IMO. I dont expect to be top 3 every year but we lost a LOT of momentum. The last couple of years I have been hearing how FSU was way ahead for 2 - 3 classes out due to instability at UF and UM. While they were spending ALL of their energy on the current class we were putting in a lot more effort towards underclassmen and were way ahead for future classes. Looks like that rosy assessment was overstated

  • When you have a commitment from the top RB in Florida and in great position to land 2 of the top 3 WRs in Florida you are having a good year.

Talk to me on signing day. Yeah the buzz is nice. But I dono... Seeing 8th graders "commit" to schools shows what it has become. can't really talk crap since I'm here. But you guys put in alot of work cudos. P.s. I'm intoxicate.

  • I think it's getting harder and harder to make the case that this class is somehow going to be in the same universe with the last two. The case most often made is that we must win big this year, and some great talents still on the table will come to us.

However, winning is overrated as an attractor of high school players, as our last two recruiting classes showed. Winning won't hurt, but for the most part players will go to a school based on things other than that.

Nobody is going to slam a #13 class as bad, of course. However, I would like to see the FSU fan who, on NSD last year, would have said, "Awesome. Now, all I really want for next year is a top 20 class, and I'll be fine with that."

  • really think the 2014 class is the focus for Jimbo & Co. I would like to see maybe 1 or 2 5 Stars with this years class but who knows what will happen.

There are a wide range of reasonable responses to this situation. The above answer is not one of them.

Apparently you do expect to be top 3 every year, since we have been the past two and this year will be top 5-10. BTW, we are already ahead of the curve for not only 2014, but 2015 as well. Go back to sleep until February.

  • To me, the fate of the 2014 class hinges on a few factors.

    1 - Need 3-4 bodies on the DL. More specifically, 2 big-time DE's

2 - At CB, keep White committed (which looks good at this point) and add either/or/both Robinson and Alexander.

3 - Add one big-time safety. This is one position that is up in the air that no one really talks about. As it stands, we have Johnson and thats it. One of McQuay, Harris or someone that emerges late as a SR.

Other than that, needs for this cycle (OL, LB) have been met, imho. This class has a great chance to finish between 5-10, especially if FSU has the season most expect them to have.

  • Hard to tell what's hurting us exactly, if you can even call it that.

Is it Stoops (and Eliot) possibly leaving?

Negative recruiting in regards to the endless depth chart debates is definitely a factor, as we keep hearing kids like Senat talking about people trying to sway him with this nonsense.

Kids still wanting to go to UM is baffling but is probably a fluid situation. The hammer comes down hard and I doubt the big name kids stick. We could clean up here.

Lotta prospects favoring UF but it just looks like circumstance rather than a trend. We got a bunch of big time prospects during the lost decade simply based on past success even when the situation at the time wasn't that good.

So yeah, I'll wait. We still have some winning to do and that could raise our profile. Another five loss season could hurt UF's class too. We should take solace in OL recruiting which many look at as a constant problem. So far so good.

What does bother me is that these kids are apparently too lazy to look at depth charts with their own two eyes. I just looked at the roster on WC and can see the losses at DT the next two years. Five will be gone. Literally took me 30 seconds to find this info.

Seems the possibility of Stoops leaving has hurt DB recruiting(which is the impression I got as to why VH3 never gave us a look) Still a long way to go to signing day, and a long season to play out, so many things can change. Just an odd year so far for us.

  • I think the talent we have amassed over te past few years is a double edged sword. That is unless we can prove to prospects that we can win, and win big, with that talent. Nobody wants to be 2nd or 3rd string on a 9-3 team. Everyone would love to be 2nd or 3rd string on a 12-0 team.

And winning big allows you to play more guys... You may not start, but you'll get snaps.

If we take care of business, I believe we will have another amazing class.

This. It's time FSU back up the talk about the ACC being weak and for FSU to absolutely torture the lesser programs in the conference, spank the decent teams in the conference, and beat Clemson and Va Tech.

FSU Football. Making cool the new swag since 2013.

  • I think this years class so far has a lot to do with our last 2 or 3 classes. We signed some really deep classes and I think other coaches are using that against us right now. Plus we need to translate the talent into wins. The jury is still out on this coaching staff in that regard.

    dirty022

  • A few months ago Josh said it looked like coaches were moving to a "recruit two years at a time" focus. Maybe what he was picking up on was a "let's fill a few needs and then sort of skip forward to 2014" strategy?

    googolplex

  • Until we start winning the depth chart will play a factor. The last couple of classes were outstanding. Isn't really kind early for people to be worried, I mean the first game is still a month away. If this was january then you might could worry.

True, it is July but we have already burned a lot of slots. I think the class will be good but right around #10 when all is said and done because we just dont have that many ships left to give. If we truly were way ahead last year for future classes (I heard this a lot both here and on WC), then we dropped the ball this year. Either that or the rosy outlook a year ago was overstated. Seems like a logical assessment to me, not sure why anyone would take issue with it.

Depending on attrition we could have as little as 7(class of 23) spots and as many as 14(class of 30)yes I've seen it said either way. That's still quite a few scholarships either way to hand out, we could lose a few kids along the way via "mutual agreement". We have plenty of room yet.
