Another Angle: The ACC Could Be PROFITABLE to FSU

  • It's been mentioned the only way the ACC will get more money is by adding ND. It's also been mentioned the ACC will always share TV money evenly.

But, what about bowl game money? If the ACC established a "keep what you kill" policy to teams making bowl games that could be a huge windfall for teams good enough to make bowl games.

It might be a move that would serve to keep the conference together in addition to being an attractive option to lure ND in.

I see that being a fair option, would you include BCS bowl money with that?

In the case of ND, the lure is:

    -academics

    -conference footprint

-commitment to non-revenue sports (ND has spent a buttload on these)

-flexibility on the NBC deal (basically ND keeps all that, and only shares the conf contract when the numbers even up, which I would imagine on a re-worked contract they will)

    -input on the 16th team

I think for what the Irish bring to the table, that is not outlandish at all.

  • I think it would be vital to the plan working to include BCS/Playoff money.

If teams were allowed to keep most, if not all, the bowl game money it would more then make up for any TV differences.

If FSU, Clemson, ND, and everyone else can keep the bowl payout - that would be a huge advantage over other conferences.

  • You don't make money on bowl games. Only BCS bowls/playoffs would net any substantial money. The ACC would never vote for that.

  • You do make money on the NCAA Tournament, though. Conferences are paid as to how far the teams advance, and how many teams are in the tourney. It would be in our best interest to have the final four be from the ACC.

The Chick-fil-a Bowl pays $3,967,500 to the ACC team. Normally, that's split between the entire conference. But, they may be able to work it out so that whichever ACC team goes to the CFA Bowl gets to keep the pay out.

This past season the Champs Sports Bowl paid out $2.125 million to FSU and ND (ND kept all theirs, FSU split theirs with the ACC).

So, while it's not a lot of money to share with the whole ACC, it would be a nice chunk of change if the team that plays in which ever bowl simply keeps the payout.

Should FSU make the Orange Bowl... $17 million (as of 2009).

Combine those numbers with the $16-17 million from TV, and years FSU makes it to the BCS we're talking about FSU bringing home $34 million. Not to mention the fact the BCS payouts are likely to go up drastically with the playoff format.

  • And there are significant costs associated with ALL bowl games. It's not cheap to send over ~150 players, coaches, support staff and personnel and administrators to these locations, especially when the majority of them are there for a good week or so. Then all the tickets for the coaches' families and administrators. It adds up. You don't make a significant amount of money on bowl games. Only BCS games and probably playoff games in the future.

The ACC would NEVER agree to this.
