ACC/SEC choice in 92

  • Did the SEC invite us in 92 and we chose the ACC or was the ACC the only option? According to Bill King this morning he alluded to us choosing the ACC for academics but I don't remember it that way.

  • if memory serves because I was in school at the time, we set up a committe to explore joining a conference, the SEC was pretty much the location, they courted us we courted them, then Gene Corrigan decided he wanted to extend the ACC football presence, and made overtures to us, when the SEC found out they were not as friendly and then they went in another direction.

Had the acc not made a hard push, we would of in all liklehood been invited by the SEC.

Least thats how I recall it.

  • Didn't the sec turn us down multiple times before we became an elite program.

I am not sure, but i do recall they were prepared to offer us in 1990, and then got PO because the ACC started talking with us, and basically felt like we were playing them to get a better deal, or maybe it was just Kramer's arrogance, probably the later.

We never got an offical invite from the SEC, we were about too, then the ACC popped in.

People will say we made the wrong choice, but at the time, Corrigan had the ACC headed in the right direction for football, GT had just won a NC, UVA had jsut played in the Sugar Bowl, Duke was a yr removed from Spurrier, Clemson was a viable top 20 program, I think 6 of the conf 8 teams were in bowls (back when there were less bowls), so it seemed like a progressive place, and the first year in 1992, we had some great conference games (GT and Clemson), not sure what exactly happened after that.

No I am talking about before the bowden era when we applied to join the sec multiple times, but they kept telling us no, and the gators have never wanted FSU in the sec.

  • Everyone wanted the SEC at the time but the ACC presented a strong argument to FSU. FSU was intrigued and the SEC had the attitude "How could you not want to join us". We used the possible SEC offer to get a great deal with the ACC. SEC voted to not extend an offer.

That's interesting to read looking back with this new perspective. Look where the "no-brainer" in 1992 has us today. Should've just joined the SEC while we had the chance. Landing in SEC would be the Promised Land to this program. Could you imagine filling Doak for all home games? Hope that has a chance. I just hope we don't end up shopping ourselves out of an offer this time too.

As for UF blocking us now, I don't see the true endgame. Alabama, Mississippi, and Tennessee all have multiple SEC schools. The state rivalries and the conference impact makes for great conference alignment. JMO

  • Sounds like there's as many stories to this one as there is for the origination of "O Canada."

Yeah, there was a if we (SEC) extend an invitation, you what do you think you would say.

so we were never officially invited but we were unpofficially invited. UM was as well (before uscjr) and said no. We both said no b/c we could make more money in the ACC and Big East respectively.

Everyone laughed when USC jr was invited.

so when geographic footprint mattered the SEC cared about ratings. Now that the geographic footprint is irrelevent b/c games are shown everywhere the SEC supposedly cares about it.

It doesn't matter to the big 10 or Mizzou and not Nebraska would be in the big 10.

SEC fan (Kentucky) just curious about the realignment talk... yes, those three states have multiple teams, but the underlying, unsaid sentiment from most flagship fanbases is that we would give up Mississippi State, Auburn, and Vanderbilt in a heartbeat for equal schools in other states. Replacing with flagships would be best, but something along the lines of Miss. State for NC State, Auburn for Virginia Tech, and Vanderbilt for Maryland would be a coupe for the SEC. Vanderbilt would actually hurt the most; The Big 10 would take the Nashville market/ gateway to the South in a heartbeat. Of course, the SEC will not kick them out (founding institutions) nor would they be inclined to move, but the SEC will not go more than one school in each state unless the University of Texas had a change of heart. We went through all this last year. FSU, Ga Tech, and Clemson need a revolutionary change in college athletics to join the SEC schools as currently composed, and I don't see that happening short of everybody abandoning the NCAA.

  • Charlie Barnes was in Orlando a little over a year ago and spent about an hour going over did we really have an invite to the SEC. He said yes we did once it was clear to the SEC we were leaning to the ACC they never took a vote.

  • Like Barron said of late, FSU has never been invited to the SEC. Not in 2011 or in 1991. They had interest once they realized the ACC had offered in 1991 for us to join them 1992. After a decade+ of Bobby trying to get into the SEC, I am sure he took great pleasure in saying suck it SEC. Too little too late. Clemson was a force back then and Georgia Tech just won the 1990 CFB NC.
