ACC thumbing their nose at FSU?

  • great thread posted by geauxnoles on another board. If true, it seems FSU is little more than the ACC's bitch.

The point that FSU would of stayed if at $18 Million clearly explains how current FSU leadership can't balance the budget. If you can get $28 Million from the Big 12 and $18 from the ACC, why would you stay in the ACC?

If FSU is going to get treated like a $20 hooker, let's go to the Big 12 and get a LOT more money:

"No GOR was included as a part of the new deal, one member said "Don't even mention them" (GOR)

We know FSU is not happy, it appears we don't care (In other words we may not make a big deal out of FSU leaving)

The deal we signed is good for 12 of the 14 members, the 12 are ecstatic

ESPN committed to us that they would not value any of our programs differently in another conference. In other words, ESPN told us that if one of our programs moved to another conference they would only offer a max increase of one (or two) current share(s).

One more try at it, if FSU joined the Big 12, the Big 12 would not be allowed to leverage FSU as a member of the Big 12 for more than an increase of one additional share.

Total value of FSU to the Big 12 = 20 million

A Big 12 CCG would bring in no more than a max increase of 24 mill to the Big 12 (2 mil per team per year), but no less than 1.5 per team

There is some mutual agreement that we no longer present FSU with the best fit for its athletic program. However Dr Barron places a higher value on the acadmeic benefit.

Only two schools would even consider leaving the ACC.

There have been no conversations between FSU and any one else, PERIOD. Dr Barron gave us his word that he will not play one conference against another.

If we cannot work out a favorable arrangement with FSU, Dr Barron will personally let us know they are going to explore other options. The implication was clear that if he notifies us they are exploring other options they are leaving

Again Dr Barron gave us his word, they will not have any conversations with anyone else until the possibility of remaining in the ACC is completely exhausted.

I believe Dr Barron, he has a high level of integrity, he told us that nothing has been discussed by ANYONE with FSU and anyone else. Dr Barron is committed to the ACC (to a point)

We may look at some way around the equal revenue sharing model, FSU would stay if we would have gotten 18 million.

We still own our tier 3 rights for basketball, baseball and olympic sports. This benefits many members like UNC that brings in 11 mil for tier 3 rights. FSU feels it is getting shorted because they do not feel they can get more than 1 to 1.5 mil for tier 3 as it is structured (without football)

BTW we have a Notre Dame clause, actually it is a clause that allows us to renegotiate again regardless of composition, or if we added ND"

  • Good points. Does seem obvious that the conference could care less about it's football programs.

  • This contract is great news. It makes everything black and white. I wouldn't trust Spetman if it were shades of grey. But its staring him in the face now. The Big 12, it really does seem, is GOING to invite us. If Spetman turns them down he will be hated with the fury of a thousand suns.

This is the burning question. I really have my doubts. The ACC may make promises, but once they get us signed sealed and delivered it will be back to business as usual.

I am just a humble observer from the Baylor board, but in the past when we start breaking out e-mails of regents and congressman, s*** was about to get real.

As someone who works in politics in Texas, take it from me that the politicians (I am including in "politicians" BOR and Presidents as well) read and listen to their constituents. I do not know who the President or AD is for Florida State University, but they do not want to be known as the regime in charge of driving away boosters, pissing off alumni and potentially hurting an athletic brand that is IMO amongst the most visible in the United States.

The ACC does not value the national brand that FSU puts on football in the conference. I think the same can be said for Clemson and VT, but not to the same degree.

I wish you guys luck. I know this is just a message board, but you never know who is reading and who is listening to what is going on. The worst thing for an AD and a president is an out of touch alumni base. People can clamor on all they want about "ACC Academics are the best...bla, bla, whatever", but football and athletics is your window to the world.

Baylor has made some serious mistakes in the past and it nearly cost us a seat at the table. However we had an AD that had a vision after 2004 that has grown BU to epic proportions that no Baylor fan has ever dreamed of. During football and basketball season we were the talk on ESPN. Whether it was RG3 winning the Heisman, our 6'8 girl that can dunk (insert dude joke here), our basketball team with uniforms that made people watch just to see how crazy they were and now our baseball team being ranked #1 or #2 in America depending on what poll you look at. Student applications are up 40% for the fall semester and a lot of credit has gone to the AD. Two Big 12 Championships, a National title, Heisman Trophy, 10-win season (second one ever), elite eight appearance and a baseball team that is fixing to make some headlines.

My point is, I do not think the scholars or academia appreciate what athletics can do for academics. If FSU moved to the Big 12 it will be the most talked about athletic move for the next year, FSU will benefit from millions of more $$$, and getting to play the likes of UT, OU and other intriguing match ups with WVU Texas Tech and OSU will make that football window bigger. If we could add Clemson and two others with you, it only validates my opinion further.

I want FSU in the Big 12 and I can tell you that every member of the conference will be doing back-flips if you come.
