25 Most Important Players For The 2013 Season

  • Had a talk with a friend of mine who’s a NFL position coach and he said something that I thought was very interesting: successful seasons are often defined by the play and health of your most important players not always your best players.

Unique ability or lack of depth behind a player could make him more important to the team’s success than a player who would be considered better. ie Cam Erving is probably more important than Rashad Green, even though most would consider Rashad the better player.

So here’s the question: who are our 25 most important players for the 2013 season. Using the link below, rank your top 25 players. I’ll post the results right before spring practice starts.

In August, as things take shape in fall practice we’ll rank again; then in January we’ll rank the 25 best players of the 2013 season.

If the players deemed most important, get hurt or don’t play up to par that could affect the team’s success. On the flipside, if the players deemed most important turn out to be our best players that too will affect the team’s success.

    My top 10 are:

    10. Nick O'Leary
    9. Mario Edwards
    8. Devonta Freeman
    7. James Wilder
    6. Bryan Stork
    5. Rashad Greene
    4. Timmy Jernigan
    3. Lamarcus Joyner
    2. Cam Erving
    1. Christian Jones

Curious to see how everyone ranks the players.

Thanks in advance to those who participate

Indeed, whoever starts, we will feel that the backup is better.

Based on your last paragraph how can you list Christian Green?

  • No Karlos Williams???!! In order for us to have an elite defense I feel he needs to step up in a big way at safety in order for us to move Joyner at cb for good. I feel like they need to rotate Joyner JUST IN CASE Karlos doesn't make the impact that the coaching staff expects. I think they are just playing it safe if he doesn't pick up the scheme quick or he gets injured. If he does well I think Joyner is full time cb and is capable of locking one side of the field down. If you notice on Bama defense they always have that one corner that is physical at the line and, in run support and can blitz. And the other side is the big play potential guy (Darby).

Bamas defense forces you into there hands. The scheme they use is just a thing of art. When they blitz they want you to go to the opposite side or when they blitz you in the pass game they want you to have to dump of to the short man. They usually have their opponents in 3&5 or morre and bring the heat to get the qb making that quick check off. Their one on one tackling is what makes them so dominant. I heard on the radio the other day the reason A&M had so much success was because Sumlin made Manziel run the play that was called and didn't allow him to check off or audible because Bama shows one thing and wants you to audible right in to their hands. After rewatching that game the first half of coaching in that game is probably the best I've ever seen in a college game. I have never seen a Saban coached defense as lost as they were. Yeah in the UGA they gave up ALOT of points. But it was more of UGA being just as physical running the ball and setting up the pass. A&M didn't out physical Bamas defense they out schemed them. I hate bama fans but I absolutely love watching bama play. Physical and just beat you down. That's why I'm so excited about Pruitt. I think right now we are just a tad bit more talented then bama on defense and it just needs to be unleashed. Not this cover 2,, don't let nothing behind you and get pressure with the front 4 crap. If we brought the house with Werner and Carradine last year we would've absolutely killed people back there. But that wasn't Stoops style and I think it was good for Jimbo to hire a guy that wants to put pressure on the offense. We may not have Pruitt but for 3 to 4 years because he has a talented roster and is relentless on the recruiting trail he has head coach written all over him.

I'm sure at #5 you mean Rashad Greene, as opposed to Christian Green.

I think Cam, Josue, & Tre are the top 3. Aguayo has to be up there. MEJ's there. I'd put Wilder+D-Free pretty high, as well. We're stacked at most of the other positions.

If karlos gets hurt move Joyner back to Safety. Instant improvement. He doesn't merit being on this list based on the criteria given.

Yeah but then who do you have at corner? Waisome?? Not a very physical guy. Would you rather have the combination of Joyner and Karlos or Joyner and Waisome? Joyner and Karlos safety/cb tandem makes up an elite defense. Waisome/Joyner doesn't. This team NEEDS Karlos to step up. He is a playmaker and a gamechanger. Im not saying Karlos is better than Joyner by any means. But with his size, speed and athletic ability. If be can put it all together and learn the scheme he has the potential to be better than Joyner. You got to have your best 11 on the field and Karlos needs to be on the field at safety and Joyner would be our best corner if he moved there full time. Karlos is the missing piece to the puzzle. Look at how many turnovers the secondary created last year. Bend but don't break defense or not but 3 ints by our secondary isn't winning us a national title.

  • My top 5 most important would have to go with the OL. We just have too many concerns there still for my liking. I like our returning 4 though.

    After that, I'd go.....

    6. Greene

    7. Joyner

    8. MEJ

    9. Jernigan

    10. Jones

Yeah the returning olineman almost have to be in everyone's top 5 b/c we have no idea if any of the backups can play. I almost put Barron in my top 10 b/c he could play center moving stork and/or another guy to rt based on some of the things I've read from people who know more about the oline than I do.

Edwards is one of 2 de's that have played in a game and has the most upside by far. Jones is our only returning starter at lb and has the talent to be an all-american this year, especially if he gets used more in blitz packages and gets a bunch of sacks. We don't have anyone on the roster who can replicate what Wilder brings to the rb position. Lamarcus' versatility and leadership would be very hard to replace, and Aguayo is our only scholarship pk and will no doubt have a shot to win a game or 2 with a clutch kick(s). Finally, Jernigan is another potential all-american and has been so disruptive his first 2 years that, even though we have great depth at dt, I couldn't leave him off the top 10. Plus this is his money year.

QB's are almost always the most important player on the team, but we have no idea who our starter is going to be. I think it will be Trickett to start off with but that one of Jameis or Coker will get a shot either b/c Trickett isn't getting it done or b/c he gets injured. It will be up to them to seize it at that point.
