Staff meeting: Football year review

Florida State went 12-2 and won the Orange Bowl for the first time since 2006.

With the 2012 football season now in the rear-view mirror, the staffs of Noles247 and the Osceola look back on the year that was and take quick look into the future.

    • At the beginning of the season, I thought a 12-2 record was attainable and FSU made it happen. For that alone, a B+ grade is in order. I cannot go any higher than that because FSU scored few style points outside the second half of Clemson and the third quarter of UF.

    • 1. FSU went 12-2, won the ACC and the Orange Bowl, but many feel that the Seminoles failed to live up to expectations. Where do you rate this year's team?

      Probably around a B+. Schedule difficulty and inconsistency aside, it's hard to ignore a 12-2 record with the first ACC championship in 7 years and first BCS win in 12 years. At the same time, due to the inexplicable loss at NC State, some uninspiring performances at VT and GT, and the let down in the 4th quarter against Florida, I just can't rate it an A.

      2. What is your most memorable moment of the 2012 football season?

      Tie for me between the Chris Thompson performance against Wake and the Lonnie Pryor performance in the Orange Bowl. Both high character guys that in just as proud of off the field as on the field.

      3. Who are your offensive and defensive MVPs?
      Offensive: EJ Manuel. Inconsistency and certain shortcomings aside, he had a good Senior season and led us on and off the field as a excellent representative of FSU football. Would have been CT4 without the injury.

      Defensive: I'm going with Werner over Carradine because of the amount of attention paid to Werner. While Carradine ha a monster season and a better season statistically, I think Werner was so good in so many aspecs of the game and demanded so much attention that helped open things up for Carradine.

      4. Who will FSU have the most difficulty replacing?

      I think it depends on if Menelik Watson goes. Assuming he stays, I think it's Werner. I'm excited to see what the young DEs can do and they have loads of potential, but how easy is it to replace a guy that could go in the Top 10 of the NFL draft and played the game not only with physical talent, but with great football acumen as well.

      5. What surprised you most about the 2012 season?

      The loss a NC State. For a group as seasoned and mature, with great character, and having gone through similar losses the previous season, I just never invisioned a 2nd half let down like that. Though it was only 16-0 at half, we had dominated he game in all phases up to that point.

      6. Looking ahead, do you expect the 2013 Seminoles to improve, regress or maintain their level of achievement from 2012?

      I think maintaining. There may be a game or two difference in the record, but I expect this team to replace guys with equal or better talent across the board. It's just a matter if that talent can mature and realize it's potential. I think a returning OL with a strong running game and seasoned group of receivers will make the transition of whomever the QB is much easier. Defensively, there is enough key players returning to soften some of the blows of who we are losing. I expect the secondary to be equally as good and possibly an improvement as LB. The defensive interior will be equally good, if not better. That just leaves he edge on the line, and there is no arguing the potential there.

    • 1. Going into the year, I said 11-2 and going to the Orange Bowl, so seeing as we did what I thought we would, I would go B+. Only way I can give an A is if we exceed expectations, which we didn't.

      2. Looking back at this season, I unfortunately, think most people will remember the NC State loss. Not just losing, but the way we lost. I think that one has stuck and will stick with people for a while. Hopefully Jimbo learns from that loss and based on how he called games for the remainder of the season, I think he did.

      3. Defense - Bjoern; too obvious there. Offense - I will go with Lonnie Pryor, simply because he does things that no one else can with regards to consistency. EJ hurt us too much for me to call him the MVP.

      4. I think it is fairly obvious that replacing Jenkins, Bjoern, and Tank at DE is by far the most difficult. Pryor is 2nd, but a distant 2nd.

      5. Definitely the ability that Thompson showed while healthy. Going into the year we all figured Freeman would start and CT would see 4-5 carries per game.

      6. On the field, probably regress a little because of losses at DE and learning from new coaches on defense. From a Wins and Losses standpoint, I think we maintain, because we should not lose at home and even if we lose to both UF and Clemson, that gives us the same 10-2 regular season record.

    • I think one thing this team learned to do this year was win. Take away the NC State disaster and we were able to win the games we were supposed to win. UF came in fired and turnovers spoiled any chance of a comeback.Next we are going to have to replace some starters, but it is going to be with maybe more talented players. I'm excited moving forward and the team should be also.
