Camp Preview: Tight Ends

Nick O'Leary

Noles247 breaks down each position as two-a-days are just around the corner. Today, it's the tight ends.

    • No mention of Will Tye? Will he see the field?

    • I always thought Will Tye would do well, but would be the best fit as a bruising fullback if he had the mentality. If he had Lonnie Pryor's toughness and football instincts, he's be a pro-bowler.

      Cuthbert

    • O'Leary's hands team contribution saved the UM game from the refs.

I think Will Tye will see a little action on the field, but I expect it to be minimal, barring injuries. Also, we don't know much about where Kourtzidis stands on the depth chart, and he could very well come in and seal up the 3 spot. O'Leary and Hicks will be the go to guys coming out of the tight end corps throughout most of the year. Don't forget how stacked the receiving corps is as well, so Jimbo isn't necessarily looking for another receiver, but guys who can help seal the edge.

At the end of the day, I do think Tye will see the field, but I don't think it'll be anywhere near the time of O'Leary and Hicks.

They have definitely put O'Leary in the HB slot during spring, and I wouldn't be shocked to see Tye thrown in that mix, either. There is so much talent throughout the entire offense, and this makes it hard to get everyone a significant amount of playing time. I think Tye will see the field; it just wasn't one of the bigger questions on my mind.

Classic....just leaped over the pile with no gloves and snagged that ball.

    • Should be a good year for O'leary. Ej said in 7 on 7's "he was giving linebackers the business" and that he was always open.

    • Really like Hicks' athleticism as TE-- Wasn't he a former basketball player? I think he could surprise with the defenses attention on NOL this year. I really hope that our athletes at TE are used appropriately and OFTEN ENOUGH that their athleticism allows for more quick passes and check downs for EJ who in my estimation was STILL STARING DOWN RECEIVERS WAY TOO much even at the end of the season.....

    • Well it appears that we might add another tight end before the season starts. I read a report today that Penn State TE Kevin Haplea is currently visiting FSU. We all know that Oleary is definitely going to get his snaps and that Dan Hicks will contribute in blocking roles, but the jury is still out on Tye and it is possible that the incoming freshman redshirts. Do you guys feel that we need help at TE? If this transfer happens will this bump Tye even further down the depth chart?

Yes, Kevin Haplea is visiting today, but we don't know much more than that. IMO, Florida State -- believe it or not -- has depth at the TE position. We know O'Leary can be a stud, Hicks can push linebackers around, and Kourtzidis has the potential to become a big threat as well, and the possible addition of a Haplea could add even more talent to the TE corps. I'm not completely sold on the idea of Haplea making his way to Florida State, but they do have another open scholarship -- so we'll wait and see.

    • Was I the only one really impressed with Hicks in the G&G game? He had a few nice grabs, one was a sweet over the shoulder that looked very natural.

I think Hicks is going to come in handy, for sure. He is extremely athletic and played TE in high school, so I don't think it'll be that hard of a transition. I don't think there's any question that he'll be utilized more often in the run game, but he'll make a huge target for EJ to check down and get the ball off.
