Second Impressions: Austin Barron

Austin Barron

Hard work earned the walk on lineman significant playing time in 2011. Barron now looks to be Florida State's starter at center in 2012.

Two-a-days are almost here and Second Impressions starts wrapping things up with a look at Austin Barron.

    • Our staff took a lot of heat from message boards when they brought this kid in. I'll admit I was a bit skeptical myself. However, this kid's development under Trickett made me an even stronger believer in our staff's overall skill set in talent evaluation, and also Trickett's ability to shape and hone a player up to on-field level rather quickly.

They haven't figured out how to award "stars" for heart. I guess that's why our staff doesn't use them in their assessment of a player.

    • George Smith really did FSU right in convincing Jimbo to take this kid.

    • He came in as a greyshirt last summer, was supposed to leave and come back in January, but performed well in summer drills and greyshirt was removed and his scholarship started in the fall.

Hard to disagree with that statement. I may be biased because I'm a Raider myself, but it says a lot about a kid whenever Coach Smith is willing to vouch for someone like that. Yeah, there's a lot of talent that comes through that program, but Smith won't go out on a limb like that for just anyone.

    • I'm not sure of the weight but no way is this kid 6'3. With that said this kid can play and is tough as nails. My little brother played high school ball with Barron and said he was the most difficult OL to go up against in practice outside of Brandon Linder(UM). Barron just needs to keep adding strength and he will likely be a starter for years to come.

Actually, we had someone leave which opened up a spot.

    • Lucky we got him. I actually am quite confident in he and Lovelady being our two deep at Center. If he's legit 6'3 295 he has a much higher ceiling than I hoped.
