Meyer on signees, race for Wiggins

Jarquez Smith

Meyer compared Smith to current Seminole Okaro White.

    • I see no new information and guy speculating based on past history with regard to Cal and Kentucky recruiting. I'm sure he has a good percentage getting recruits he wants but the intangibles we have lead me to believe it will be extremely hard for him to turn FSU and Leonard Hamilton unless we have a disastrous season.

    • Lets just hope we pitch the "If you go to Kentucky you'll be just another 5 star, if you come to FSU you'll be the man". That's about the only thing I can think of that differentiates FSU from UK other than the personal ties to FSU.

    • Calipari's pitch to HS kids: "that I put players in the NBA" is silly with these blue chippers. It doesn't matter where Wiggins goes; he's one-and-done and a top 5 pick. So he doesn't NEED UK or Calipari. The question is where does he want to play for 1 year. Hope it's Tally.

I think it is a bit misguided to lump his "personal ties" as just something that hardly means anything. Think about what we are talking about.

      (1) Both parents were star FSU athletes, not one, BOTH...Double whammy!
      (2) Best friend, teammate and current commit is also the son of FSU star athlete. We aren't just talking buddies, we are talking kids that grew up together. Families are best friends, calls Andrew's sister his sister and vice-versa. The only thing truly separating these kids is blood. Do you truly think that is just something that "differentiates" UK and FSU? That is a "chasm" in personal relationships by comparison, and none of that takes into account the relationship he has built with Ham who has been recruiting him for years. We were one of the first teams to even see his talent and offer.

none of this will change when he decides to spend 1 season at kentucky

He doesn't need any team to become the #1 pick, the only question he has to answer really is, does he want to carry on the family tradition at FSU and have a nice year of college basketball, or does he want to go to UK, where a championship is almost inevitable with the 2013 class they are bringing in. I personally think UK wins out, I think the championship allure will be too much to pass up for his 1 year in college. Plus, Calipari will put him in a position to show, not only is he the best player in the country, but also an unselfish team player, like he has done with almost every recruit he has had since at UK. Their players have to sacrifice a lot personally for the team, and that character is something NBA scouts and GM's really love, on top of talent.

    • BTW, article title insinuates the race belongs to Wiggins (not the race for him), or suggests that Meyer is discussing Wiggins' race (which I believe is African American and not subject to much dispute).

I might suggest dropping the apostrophe.

    • Meh, Jerry Meyer is the best in the biz and you can find that info on any blog on the web about BBall recruiting. Would love a follow up with some form of insider knowledge on what the actual dynamics in play are, etc. Saying its FSU and UK with UK having a small lead is exceedingly common knowledge.

Coach Cal has it going on, no doubt.

But to crown the champs based upon recruiting classes in CBB is fools gold.

Six wins in 3 weeks is tough wearing a bullseye. I've seen a lot of the best teams in my 40 years not pull it off.

Like has been said, he's a top pick irregardless, ought fare better leading a solid team than joining a team based upon potential talent

      Just my homer thoughts.

How is it that he won't be able to have championship aspirations at FSU if he comes here? This team would be loaded with Wiggins and XRM next season.

    • Alot of people around FSU feel very confident that Wiggins picks FSU. It wouldnt shock me either way, but this wont be something we sweat out till the day he signs, I think we know where he is going weeks before he signs.

Because Leonard Hamilton is the coach. Plus, UK, Kansas, even UFpukeface will have more talented teams. I mean, face it, UK just signed 4 5 stars in the early signing period, and will sign 2 more of the 3 of Andrew Wiggins, Julius Randle and Aaron Gordon. At this point, if Calipari has a 5 star bust, it will be his first, but he will have 5 more to fall back on.
